Children Sing for Peace
On Sunday June 24th 2007, 32 children aged mainly between 8 and 16, gathered
in the Uki Hall to sing a song for Peace.
15 year old Jonathan Harvey accompanied the children on guitar
as they sang ‘I am not at war’ by Irish songwriter Luka Bloom. 13
year old Madeleine Magee-Carr played the clarinet solo. I asked
local film-maker Harmony Joy Church if she would film the children singing
and she was thrilled to be part of this non-profit event.
I thought it would be helpful to the cause of World Peace if
children around the world heard and sang ‘I am not at war’. I
imagined children singing the song in many different languages. I
thought we could start in Uki!
I believe children need to know they have a voice and that they
will be heard. They need to be optimistic and hopeful about their
future. Singing a song like this was a positive and empowering experience
for them. Each of us has the power to create positive change even
if it is in a small way.
